Spring Summer Porch Ideas

Hey there!  Hope everyone is doing well!  Ive had lots of fun the last week or so changing our front porch out for Spring and Summer.  We do a lot of living out there during the summer on warm evenings and nights, so, I really try to pay just as much attention to it as I do the inside.  And its fun, so, why not, right?
Our front porch has been several different colors during the time that we have lived here and Ive never been satisified with any of them, hence, painting them over and over.  Last summer I painted it a very dark chocolate brown, which I really liked at the time of the painting.  Ive come to the conclusion that the reason I liked it so much is because it really did look like dark chocolate while it was in the can and as I was rolling it on.  It was luscious and I wanted to it eat it.  Of course, I didnt.  Anyway, a couple of days after it dried, I hated it, but hubby would have thought I had lost my mind if I painted over it so soon with something else so I just lived with it until now.   At this point, he kind of expects me to change paint colors with the seasons, so, changing it now, wouldnt be so crazy.
This year I decided to do stripes on our front porch, just like I did on our side porch last year.  I already had all the paint, which was white and manchester tan, so I taped off 12 inch sections and got busy.  After it was all dry, I gave it a couple of coats of water based Varathane for high traffic floors.  Water based so it wouldnt yellow over time like oil based does over light colors.  Heres how it looks now.
Pretty sure I wont be changing this because I LOVE it.  I did a couple of DIY projects while decorating this area and I will blog about those later.  First up is this nifty jar candle hanging lanterns thing (for lack of a better word) that I put together with some of my old jars, wire, rope and scrap walnut and attached to the ceiling of our porch.  (ignore the wind chime....I forgot to take it down before taking the photo)
Crazy about that as we sit outside a lot at night and doing that by candlelight will be really special and fun.  I filled the jars with lavender and tea lights.
I love to sit here and chat with my boys about their day or read to my youngest in this cozy corner.  At night snuggling up to hubby here is the best way to end the day.  Theres nothing better.  Or we like to sit here and eat our lunch together.
My color scheme for the porch was taken from the pillows on the swing.  It had light orange, melon, light lime green and very light lavender.  I ordered the large orange dot fabric here.  I ordered two yards and had enough to make a large lumbar pillow for the settee and a smaller pillow for the swing.  That dot pillow just makes me smile.  Its so cheerful and fun, perfect for the porch.
I picked up the ceramic garden stool at a flea market for 15 bucks.  I was thrilled about that because Ive always wanted one but they were just too high.  I cleaned it up and spray painted it white.  It was off white when I bought it and rather dingy, so, I thought bright white would be perfect.
That sucker is heavy!
My hubby collects old minnow buckets and I just love them.  I thought they would make cool planters for flowers and ferns with their splash of color and shiny galvanized coating.  And by using them, there is also a piece of him in the decor, as well.  :)  The only other thing I purchased for the porch was this really cool vintage step ladder.  I wanted something unique to place a fern on instead of just popping it into a plain planter and thought this was perfect.  I had my eye on it at a flea market but wasnt sure about the price so hubby talked them down a little and bought it for me for around 15 bucks as well.  It was red and gross but I loved it anyway because of the X in the back, a design I adore, and I knew I could give it a little TLC and make it into something special.  Ill blog about how I did that later and show you the before pics.
And thats it for the front porch!
Ill be blogging about the ladder and jar lanterns soon!  Have any of you decorated your porch yet for Spring and Summer?  Have a great weekend!

Fall Porch Preview

I happen to love Autumn and Halloween.  Some of my most favorite memories with my dad are during Halloween when my children were younger.  He truly enjoyed that day, just like a kid himself.  Hubby and I always spent Halloween at my parents house along with my sister and it was so much fun.  We would take our kiddos trick or treating around the neighborhood with Mom while Dad cooked up a big pot of chili for all of us to enjoy.  Then when the kids were worn out, or maybe we were, wed walk back to their house to enjoy a warm bowl of chili and it always smelled so good inside.  Warm, welcoming and home, you know?
While my youngest never got to meet his Papa, Im glad his older siblings have those memories and share them with him often.  Its important to me that he know what a kind and fun man his grandpa was.  These days, I make my dads chili for my family and we create new memories.
And while most of our kids are now too old for trick or treating, hubby and I still take our youngest and love to visit my parents old neighborhood just so we can remember all the fun we used to have.  Its one of those special memories I will always cherish.  And Im so thankful I can still go back there and remember....
Because of those memories, decorating for that season is always special for me and special for my family so thats what I spent this past weekend doing.   I want to make it fun for them because its our tradition. Its not quite ready yet but I wanted to give you a little preview just to peak your interest a little.....
This year, Im going all out on the decor.  :)  And Im looking forward to finishing it up and blogging about the rest of the porch soon!
Enjoy your day!

Back Side Porch Ideas For Summer and An Industrial Pipe Curtain Rod How To

Hey there!  When we first found our home 6 years ago, I was absolutely in love with this side porch off the kitchen.  At the time of course, it looked awful because it was in the middle of being renovated, but, I saw what it could be.  I pictured pots of delicious herbs just waiting to be harvested for cooking, a cozy table to enjoy lunch or a morning cup of tea or coffee, or just a place to sit and read.  Funny thing was, it wasnt until now, 6 years later, that I finally filled the porch with those things.  I have no idea why.
We have a large vegetable garden in our backyard, complete with herbs, so, it never occurred to me to also have some on the porch.  My hubby came home the other day with a crate that he found beside the road that I just loved.  I had it sitting on the porch for a few days waiting until I decided what to do with it when I realized how much I loved it on the porch.  And an idea was born; fill it with unique herbs that I dont have in my vegetable garden, but that I would like to experiment with in the kitchen.
I like to keep the decor on this porch simple, so, heres what I did.
Last year when I made these porch curtains, I just hung them with rope instead of going to the trouble of installing a rod, very rustic and easy.  This year, after seeing industrial copper pipe curtain rods everywhere, I just had to try making some, so, I went to Lowes and priced copper.  Uh....yeah, way too expensive.  So I stood in Lowes for an hour trying to come up with a cheaper way.  Total cost, $25 for two 4 feet long rods.  Heres what I came up with.
I used PVC pipe and spray painted it with the best metallic copper spray paint.  The quick tutorial will be at the end of this post.
I love how they turned out!  Its like a little surprise inside the porch.
Heres the crate my hubby found.
I filled it with italian parsley, purple basil, chamomile, dill and cinnamon basil.
The hand carved oar is vintage and was found by hubby.
I painted these stripes on our back porch last summer.  They match our front porch, as well.
Hubby also found this metal garden planter.  I didnt care for the brown color, so, I spray painted it with the extra copper spray paint.  The vintage faucet towel rack I made a couple months ago, click here for the tutorial.  It will be the perfect thing to hold my kiddos wet towels this summer from swimming, instead of piling them on the floor.  And is the perfect pop of color.
And thats it for the back porch!
Best thing is its exactly like I pictured it 6 years ago. :)  Finally....
Heres what you need to make the pvc pipe curtain rods.
Everything was found in the plumbing department at Lowes, except the spray paint.  Its important to note that if you make your rod any longer than about 3 - 4 feet like mine, you will need a middle support as they will droop a little from the weight of your curtains.
I started by cutting the pvc pipe to size and then cutting four 1 inch pieces to use to connect the elbows to the adapter.   Then connect the elbow to the pipe.
Next, connect your 1 inch piece of pipe.
Take your adapter/connector and flange......
Screw the connector into the 1/2 inch flange.
Then connect it to the elbow and pipe.
And thats it!  Spray paint next!
Make sure that when you spray paint, you spray light coats, keeping the nozzle at least 12 inches from the rod, or the paint will run.  Let dry completely between coats.  I painted 3-4 coats.  Then attach with screws through the flanges.  I dont know the exact terms for these parts, so I hope this is helpful.  I should also mention that I had a nice Lowes sales person help me find the right parts after I told him what I had in mind.  That helps a lot!
See how nice the spray paint goes on, even though its plastic?  Perfect!  And so much cheaper than real copper!  As always, if you have questions, feel free to ask in the comments below or shoot me an email!
Note:  After your rod is painted and complete but BEFORE you hang it, you can easily pull off the end to slide on your curtains.  Then reattach the end and hang.  Be sure to do this before you attach them to your wall or you wont have a way to put your curtains on the rod.
Ive got so many fun projects going and I cant wait to blog about them all!  And Im still working on those tutorials, as promised!
Have a great day!

Fall Porch Ideas

I probably say this every year but I think I had the most fun this year decorating our porch for Fall.   I do love this time of year and I think its so fun and festive to see everyones homes decorated for the Fall season.  But more than anything, some of my most cherished family memories are during the Fall/Halloween season.
I think that one of my favorite things about decorating for Fall is that most of the things we use come from nature; hay bales, corn stalks, mums and pumpkins.   Its natural and organic, which I love.
If you read my front door post, I told you that I also completely changed our wood screen door.  It has also been painted many colors since we bought it years ago, so I stripped all the paint off with paint stripper, sanded it and stained it.
Ive had a lot of people ask me where we bought this door and the answer is Lowes.  It had a mahogany colored shellac of some sort on it when we bought it and I didnt care for it so we just painted over it.  I love the finish it has now as it makes the door look aged which I just love.
I did NOT strip the paint off the grid on the door over the screen because that would have been torture so instead I just painted it using the same technique I used on the front door to make it "look" like wood.  I also used a strip of cut up coffee sack to hang a wreath.
My hubby found this old porcelain sink but the finish was a bit icky so I painted it with spray paint textured with sand and filled it with pumpkins, twigs and antlers.  I just liked the rough texture the sand spray paint gave it.
My hubby also found this old ladder that I just loved because of the paint spilled all over it.  So I made burlap squares and stenciled letters onto them to spell BOO for Halloween and pinned them to the ladder rungs.
Because we love to add Halloween touches to our Fall decor, I also printed out silhouettes of crows and stenciled them on burlap and made pillows.  After Halloween, I will simply flip them over and stencil something for Thanksgiving on the other side.  This didnt cost anything since I already had a big roll of burlap and black paint.  And I covered pillows that I already had.
I still have the mason jar tea light holders hanging from the porch ceiling.  And I love the natural jute rope wrapped around the ugly chain on our porch swing.
I love taking pictures at dusk but Im still learning.  The warm glow coming from the inside of a home at this time of day is so inviting.
I sure hope thats what people feel when they visit our home.   :)
Happy October 1st!

Autumn Porch Ideas

Hey there!  We spent the weekend finishing up our front porch and we had so much fun doing it.  We are in the middle of an exciting time (albeit scary) with our shop opening in two weeks (eeekkkk!) and Ive been feeling really festive so going all out on the decor was something I really wanted to do this year.  And if you read this post, you know why decorating for fall is so special to me.  So, heres what we did.....
I started by making the trick or treat pillow cover out of burlap and canvas dropcloth to cover the orange dot pillow that I had on the porch from the summer.  Then I cut out a patch of dropcloth and stenciled Trick of Treat on the front using the font Stampete.  I enlarged the font to 250 on the computer and printed it out, cut it out and stenciled it on using black and orange paint.  After it was dry, I sewed it on the burlap, attached a couple of ties to the end, and put it on the existing pillow.
We recently replaced our porch swing with a newer one and I wanted to add a couple of pillows to it for fall.  Black is a color I dont normally include in our decor but I thought black pillows for the porch for fall would be something different and add a touch of class, as well as, be perfect for Halloween.  I had trouble finding the right black fabric so I purchased a black fabric shower curtain and attached this natural looking ribbon in an X pattern to the front.  I love how they turned out.
I dont usually buy corn stalks, hay, pumpkins and mums in the fall for our front porch decor but I really wanted to this year.  Usually I leave out the corn stalks but this year they seem really festive.
Im not a fan of the ugly plastic pots that mums come in so I simply wrapped them in my leftover burlap fabric and tied with a piece of hemp twine.
My hubby recently came across this old railroad kerosene light at an auction.   We took the guts out and I put a candle inside.  As much as Id like to keep it, it will be for sale in our shop. :)
He also found this vintage wooden egg crate so I turned it into a planter and stuck a pot of mums inside.
I also added a couple more to another crate that we used to have on the back porch.  I love the time worn feel old crates add, as well as, the wood texture.
I like the wonderful muted colors of these heirloom pumpkins better than the orange kind when it comes to decor so I picked up a few.  We save the orange pumpkins for the fun jack o lanterns we carve when it gets closer to Halloween.  :)
I love fall!!
We also love lights on the porch all year long so we just string them up on the top inside of the porch.  They create a warm cozy glow in the evenings that you cant help but enjoy.  :)
Have you decorated your porch for fall or Halloween yet?
P.S.  Ive received a lot of emails asking the location of our shop and I will share that info in an upcoming post.

Porch Project

Hey there!  Did everyone have a nice weekend?  Our weather was gorgeous so we worked on outside projects like pulling weeds and gardening.  I added some lavender to our herb garden and after pulling weeds, discovered that our asparagus is coming up!  This is our first year with asparagus, so we are very excited!  Especially my youngest!
It is in his garden bed along with strawberries that he picked out.
Ive also started planning how Im going to decorate our side porch this year.  Ive ordered some fabrics, added a bistro table and worked on this super fun row of hooks, made from vintage faucets.  After seeing a similar version in a gardening catalog, I decided to make my own with things I already had.  The only thing I paid for was 4 cans of spray paint and a dowel rod.  Heres a peek at it on our side porch.
I thought Id post a tutorial for it in case anyone wanted to try making their own.  All you need is a few old faucet handles, spray paint, a piece of rustic wood, screws, rubber gaskets and a 5/8 inch dowel rod.
You can find old faucet handles at flea markets, junk piles, or metal scrap yards.  Just give them a good scrub with a wire brush.
First thing I did was get all my pieces spray painted.  The dowel I painted oil rubbed bronze, because thats what I had on hand.  Then I spray painted the faucet handles various colors.  After everything dried, I cut the dowel into five 4 inch pieces.
I used a piece of reclaimed walnut for the back.  After sanding and sealing, I drilled 5 holes all the way through it, also with a 5/8 inch drill bit.
Next, I hammered the cut pieces of dowel rod into each hole, all the way through until flush with the back.
These are what the faucet handles will attach to.  Next, pre-drill a hold for your screw.
Then take your black rubber gasket and slide it over the dowel until it is securely at the base of the dowel.  These are purely for decorative purposes.
Take your completely dry faucet handle and thread a 1 1/2 inch screw and washer through the top.
Repeat with your remaining faucet handles.  I took a little spray paint and touched up each one of the screw heads so they better blended in with the faucet handle.  I also distressed the handles with sandpaper.
I love the letters on a couple of the handles.
I love the way it turned out.  It is the perfect thing to hold towels this summer that my kids use for swimming, instead of dropping them on the porch into a pile.
And my gardening tools will also look lovely there.  Then I can just grab them on my way out the door to work in the garden.
What do you think?  I love the little bit of cheerful color it adds to the side porch.  I attached it to the house with a couple of large screws.  I hope my instructions arent confusing.  As always, if you have questions, please dont hesitate to email me!
Stay tuned for the rest of the porch update for Spring/Summer!
