I finally figured out what I wanted to do with one of the big window frames we came across and finished it up yesterday. Let me tell ya, this sucker is heavy. Because of that, the only way we could figure out to hang it was from the ceiling joists. So, thats what we did. And it was quite a job getting those screwed in and getting that window up there. We used 2 large screw hooks for the joists, 2 large screw eyes for the window,
and connected the two with galvanized chain.
We couldnt be happier with the results.
I decided to take down the ledge I built and use it in another room. It had been there almost since we moved in and I was ready for a change in this little entry area. This was really the most logical place for the window. A lot of you suggested using it for a room divider, which I would have loved to do, however, our home is made up of lots of smallish rooms (except the dining room), not an open floor plan, so, there wasnt a room that needed to be divided.
I put together the little shelf in the corner for about 8 bucks using a piece of barn wood and "L" brackets from Lowes. I like using "L" brackets for shelves much better than using the brackets that are actually made for shelving. I like the industrial look of these and they are less expensive. These are 5 1/2 inches and cost 4 bucks each. You can find these, as well as other sizes, in the hardware section of Lowes or any home improvement store.

I found the pillow fabric here.
I really like the combination of the modern fabric pillows with the rustic bench.

Looking at this window makes me happy because it reminds me
of the fun bike rides we take every evening.

Now I have to figure out what to do with the others window frames or just
put them in our upcoming shop.
We have video and photos of that coming soon!
Have a great day!

Our little dressing room has grown and matured so much in a few short years.
This room serves all our clothing needs including laundry folding, ironing, and every day dressing.
Here she is as a youngster.
And now she has graduated, making both of us very proud.
This is the area that we needed the most, a place to put clean laundry and fold it.
I saw this frame available at the auction I knew I wanted it and knew it would be painted. The Whitehall Laundry sign is an actual a fabric laundry "BAG".
I purchased the bag from a lady that deals in estates and furniture.
?
One of the many signs hanging on the walls is also covering the fuse box.
The curtain tie backs & scrolled metal shelf brackets are second hand buys.
The shelf is cut from 2 pine bed rails and is extra deep.
This thick vanity surface was stolen from a large midcentury desk I tore down for parts. We found
this drawers and pull out on the side of the road. I customized and installed them under the surface.
This solid brass urn had a wonderful patina in dark reds and browns when I first got it.
It was handmade in India, sorry India, I had to paint it.
The stacked dresser are perfect in this corner.
Details about their transformation can be found here.
I painted these baskets white using my sprayer.
New baskets whether white or brown are priced very close so think before you buy.Because spray painting old brown baskets takes a lot of paint and time which will translateinto a good deal of money but it is an option to recycle them.
One problem I still have with the room is an ironing board.
I wanted to get one in a cabinet that hangs on the wall then hinge this full length mirror to it.
Mom and Dad had one in their house and it was great,
but the cost of these wonderful things is high
so I will make due for now until I can find one or figure out how to build one.
More pictures can be seen at OUR HOME TOUR,
and
I have also added some pictures on the BEFORE AND AFTER page

Patience. Not a word I would use to describe myself when it comes to projects.
My husband would agree. :)
Remember this wood I showed you last week?
Imagine my surprise when I cut into it and realized it was pure gorgeous walnut.
Well, my hubby and middle son went out of town this past weekend for a sports event and I decided I was going to get to work on the project I had in mind while they were away
so I could surprise him when they returned. The walnut discovery had me so excited,
I just couldnt wait to get started.
Silly me thought it would be something I could easily tackle myself.
Wrong.
While I show you pictures of the finished project, you should know that getting to that point was somewhat of a nightmare.
For starters, I couldnt get the previous cabinet off the wall. So, I had to call in a neighbor to help out with that after I fell off the counter. Because the wood is so extremely heavy,
I really had no idea what kind of brackets to use.
My lack of bracket knowledge caused 3 trips to Lowes in one day buying and returning various brackets of different sizes and weights. Not to mention, attaching them to the wood thinking they would work and then removing them when I realized they wouldnt. Attaching and removing, attaching and removing.

When I finally decided on the track system with brackets, only because of the amount of weight it could hold, I couldnt get them screwed into the studs. It wasnt that I couldnt find the studs, I could thanks to the previous cabinet. It was that I wasnt strong enough and happen to have a bad habit, to which my hubby can attest, of stripping screws when I have difficulty getting them into studs. And because of my precarious position of standing on a countertop, I simply couldnt get a good grip.
But, I was determined. And I really wanted to have it finished before my hubby and son got home. They had had a lot of car trouble in desert heat while traveling 5 hours and the last thing I wanted was for him to have to come home to fix what I started.
And Sunday was my first borns 20th birthday.
I wanted to get it finished so I could concentrate on making his day special.

I finished up around 2 a.m. the morning my family was supposed to return and just in time for my oldest sons birthday celebration. The look on their faces and the "wow" and big smile that came out of my hubbys mouth made all of the frustration totally worth it.
This is definitely a two person job. And I did have a little helper. Our youngest, who made me laugh every time I wanted to toss the shelves into the trash. :)
I love these shelves. My family loves these shelves.
Would I do this project again?
No. :)
But thats because I got in a rush, thought I could do it fast and without any help.
Boy was I wrong.
Live and learn, right? :)
For those wondering, the paint on the walls is called Light Gray by Farrow and Ball.
All frustrations aside, I am so happy with how it turned out and
how they are a nice accent to the barn wood center island table.
Have a great day!
Diana
